Black Mountain Press is a literary press for outstanding emerging writers publishing several different genres of books annually. For the next three years from 2012 through the end of 2014 our focus will be in collections of poetry, memoir, novels and collections of short stories. Our editors are looking for the highest quality literary fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry that combines a distinct voice and vision for this literary small press located in Asheville, NC.

Reading Period: We will accept submissions from March 1st through December 2014. If a stamped mailer is enclosed, your submission will be returned; if not, it will be recycled.

Regular Mail Procedure: We do not accept email submissions or any form of electronic documents. We accept manuscripts via regular mail only. Send one hard copy of your finished, book-length manuscript, along with a cover letter containing contact information, relevant biographical information. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of thee page only; prose manuscripts double spaced with a 12pt font.

For these submissions include a self- addressed stamped #10 size envelope (SASE) for our reply. Do not send us your only copy, if a stamped mailer is enclosed we will return your copy, if not it will be recycled.

We do not accept unsolicited query letters, sample chapters, or proposals to the editors. We are only interested in seeing your completed manuscript. We also do not publish stand-alone poems or stories. We also are not accepting any children’s or young adult literature, plays or self-help books over the next three years. We do not publish romance, science fiction, thrillers, detective fiction, horror stories, westerns, or anthologies. How-to guides will continue to be accepted on a limited basis during these three years.

Response Time: We have a small editorial staff, and we respond to submissions within five to six months. Because of the volume of submissions, we simply cannot take phone calls or respond to emails inquiring about the status of manuscripts. If you haven’t heard from us in six months, please send a letter..
